DESCRIPTION:Building on the organizing work against federal attacks on our communities through organizations like the North Carolina Council of Churches and Siembra NC\, and congregations like yours\, we are inviting you to a meeting on December 11 from 11-12:30pm on Zoom to plan for Lent of Action in your congregations. \nAs rising authoritarianism takes hold in our national and state politics\, we see the same patterns repeated: the targeting of immigrants and poor families\, the dismantling of the public good through cuts to schools\, healthcare\, SNAP\, and more\, and the sowing of division through fear and cruelty. As pastors\, ministers\, and lay leaders\, we know this moment calls for more than thoughts and prayers. To protect the rights and dignity of immigrants and refugees\, to keep their families intact\, and to make the United States into a welcoming place for all migrants requires all of us working together to take action. \nPlease join us for the webinar “Loving Our Neighbors in a New Administration.” This webinar will begin with updates from Christy Williams of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network about what to expect in the coming weeks and months and how that could affect immigrants and refugees both at a federal and state level. Then\, we will offer concrete ways you and your congregation can speak out and take action alongside our newest immigrant and refugee neighbors. After this we will ask participants to end the call by filling out a short survey about where they are located and how they would like to be involved based on the opportunities offered. It is our hope that we can create coalitions of people of faith who want to work together to create relationships and spaces that will protect\, serve\, and welcome all of our neighbors. We cannot wait to see what could happen in the coming weeks and months. SUMMARY:Webinar: A Faithful Response to ICE Raids and Detentions
DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of 2016\, ICE (Immigration and Custom Enforcement) stepped up deportations of undocumented Central Americans in North Carolina. Now is the time for faith communities to respond to these raids\, which have separated families\, imposed suffering and heightened fears among the immigrant community. This webinar will use recordings from a community forum held in Asheville last month to include updates on local organizing strategies from the western part of the state that can be used statewide\, including emergency response\, sanctuary\, improving relationships with local law enforcement\, and other legal issues that churches may face. \nSpeakers:\nAnton Flores Maisonet\, co-founder of Alterna\, a Christian missional community based in Georgia and comprised of U.S. citizens and Latin American immigrants.
