DESCRIPTION:Juana Luz Tobar Ortega and Minerva Cisneros Garcia are currently in sanctuary in two churches in Greensboro: St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and Congregational United Church of Christ. This benefit concert will provide funds for legal fees\, support for their families\, and seed money for other faith communities considering becoming sanctuary congregations. Our families\, friends\, neighbors and co-workers are terrified about being detained and deported; profiled because of their religion\, race or political beliefs; losing their health coverage; and facing hate and discrimination. Learn why congregations across the region and country are choosing to support and provide sanctuary\, what it means in practice\, and how to be successful at “Sanctuary Matters: Testimony and Best Practices.” \nSunday\, September 17 from 2-5 p.m. Community UCC will host an in-person\, half-day training for congregations and clergy leaders interested in providing support and sanctuary for vulnerable individuals in North Carolina. We will discuss the many ways that your congregation can stand up against hate and dehumanization at this moment. Topics will include testimony from people who have been in sanctuary and congregations that have opened their doors as sanctuaries as well as training for congregations that are in the discernment process. The keynote speaker is Rev. Noel Andersen\, Grassroots Organizer for Church World Service out of the Washington DC office. Other speakers include Rev. Court decisions have offered a reprieve\, but the administration’s determination to make many newcomers to our country scapegoats and the targets of misguided hostility has only emphasized their vulnerability. \nJennie Belle\, Program Director for Immigration and Farmworkers\, has been fielding questions about the issue. DESCRIPTION:On January 20\, 2017\, the Trump administration begins\, and we know that this represents a serious danger for our immigrant and refugee communities. To protect the rights and dignity of immigrants and refugees\, to keep their families intact\, and to make the United States into a welcoming place for all migrants requires all of us working together to take action. \nPlease join us for the webinar “Loving Our Neighbors in a New Administration.” This webinar will begin with updates from Christy Williams of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network about what to expect in the coming weeks and months and how that could affect immigrants and refugees both at a federal and state level. Then\, we will offer concrete ways you and your congregation can speak out and take action alongside our newest immigrant and refugee neighbors. After this we will ask participants to end the call by filling out a short survey about where they are located and how they would like to be involved based on the opportunities offered. It is our hope that we can create coalitions of people of faith who want to work together to create relationships and spaces that will protect\, serve\, and welcome all of our neighbors. We cannot wait to see what could happen in the coming weeks and months. DESCRIPTION:As the Triangle community responds to the global refugee crisis and intense backlash against Syrian refugees after the devastating attacks in Beirut\, Paris and Baghdad\, local faith communities are sending an intentional message of welcome to all refugees and immigrants. On Monday\, December 7 at 6 PM\, faith leaders\, service organizations\, refugee resettlement agencies and immigrant advocates will hold a prayer vigil immediately followed by multicultural dinner organized by the North Carolina Council of Churches. At the dinner\, participants will enjoy food from home and ancestral countries\, and will discuss the importance of building a welcoming community for refugees and immigrants\, highlighting the contributions they make to the Triangle communities. \nAll are invited to come together to pray for peace throughout the world and then to break bread with our neighbors from other countries. Please bring a dish from your own culture or ancestry to share and/or\, a canned food donation for the food pantry of Urban Ministries. Clergy from First Baptist Church of Elon\, First United Methodist Church of Elon\, Elon Community Church and Buckhorn United Methodist Church will lead the service.
