DESCRIPTION:At noon of Wednesday\, January 10\, the NC General Assembly will convene for a session in which judicial reform is expected to be a hot topic. Legislators conspicuously have been weighing an overhaul of the state’s method of choosing judges. The process for decades has been through election by the voters. Progressive reforms made those elections non-partisan\, but the legislature recently has restored party labels to ballots in judicial races. Now\, some top legislators are angling toward doing away with those elections altogether in favor of an appointive system. Who is seeking sanctuary? Who leads sanctuary? How do faith communities declare sanctuary? To answer these questions\, the NC Religious Coalition for Justice for Immigrants has created a brand new six-week E-course. Each week\, you will receive a different course in your inbox. This course has been updated from the previous course to include new videos\, podcasts\, and readings about sanctuary\, and includes a new week focused specifically on alternatives to physical sanctuary. \nClick here to register. Learn why congregations across the region and country are choosing to support and provide sanctuary\, what it means in practice\, and how to be successful at “Sanctuary Matters: Testimony and Best Practices.” \nSunday\, September 17 from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Community United Church of Christ will host an in-person\, half-day training for congregations and clergy leaders interested in providing support and sanctuary for vulnerable individuals in North Carolina. We will discuss the many ways that your congregation can stand up against hate and dehumanization at this moment. Topics will include testimony from people who have been in sanctuary and congregations that have opened their doors as sanctuaries as well as training for congregations that are in the discernment process. The keynote speaker is Rev. DESCRIPTION:The Council along with EqualityNC and the Equality Federation are bringing together three speakers to look at the ethical implications of HB2 for people of faith. \nThey are: \nThe Rev. Dr. David Gushee\, a leading Christian ethicist and moral voice in the evangelical movement who currently serves as Vice President of the American Academy of Religion and incoming President-Elect of the Society for Christian Ethics. He is a professor of Christian Ethics and Director of the Center for Theology and Public Life at Mercer University in Atlanta. \nThe Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman\, Senior Pastor of St. Phillip AME Zion Church in Greensboro and the Executive Director of Clinton’s Corner of Catawba Community Development Corporation\, which deals primarily with the plight of those in the throes of poverty. He is third vice president of the NC NAACP\, a staunch LGBTQ advocate\, and president-elect of the Council. \nWilliam S. Meyer\, an associate clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center where he has worked for 30 years. He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work and has written and spoken publicly about the psychological and spiritual harms faced by LGBTQ individuals. \nThe public is invited\, and admission is free.
