SUMMARY:Documentary Screening: Wilmington on Fire
DESCRIPTION:During both the pre- and post-Civil War eras\, lynching was used with impunity by patrols of KKK members to intimidate\, terrorize\, incarcerate and kill black people. Then as now\, unpunished acts of racial intimidation and violence by citizens and officers sworn to protect and serve the people\, perpetuate racism in today’s criminal justice system. \nPlease join Campaign Nonviolence for a pre-screening rally at 5 p.m. on Bicentennial Mall in downtown Raleigh. Dr. Kimberly Muktarian\, DC lobbyist and President of Save Our Sons of Raleigh\, will lead the rally for racial and criminal justice reform. \nThe screening and dinner will begin at 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church’s Family Life Center. Wilmington on Fire is a documentary released in 2015 that investigates the history of the Wilmington Massacre of 1898. \nA Question & Answer session will be held with Dr. Kimberly following the film and she will share about her involvement in a state-to-state anti-lynching initiative. A love offering will also be collected to help offset the costs of this event. \nFor questions and to RSVP\, please contact Campaign Nonviolence event coordinator Barbara Smalley-McMahan at 919-559/5549 or text the word JUSTICE along with the first names of those attending. \nNo one will be turned away at the door.

SUMMARY:NC No Torture Interfaith Prayer Vigil - Johnston County
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to an interfaith gathering to remember the victims of the CIA’s rendition and torture program.  The vigils will offer an opportunity to hear speakers from several faith traditions\, meditate and to join with fellow citizens who believe North Carolina has a responsibility to call for transparency and accountability for those who were transported using state facilities and to ensure this dark period in history never repeats. \nAero Contractors\, headquartered at the Johnston County Airport\, was responsible for secretly rendering at least 49 people between 2001 and 2004.  The rendition experience included beatings\, being stripped\, diapered\, drugged\, and loaded onto Aero’s jets for flights to torture sites. There\, detainees were subjected to water torture\, prolonged painful stress positions\, sexual humiliation\, and much more  N.C taxes provided the two airports in Smithfield and Kinston that were home to the jets and their personnel. \nThe North Carolina Commission of Inquiry on Torture (NCCIT) will release its report on the morning of September 27\, 2018. The seminal report is released after an 18 month inquiry and renews the call for a governmental investigation into these illegal and immoral activities. \nThe NC Council of Churches “NC No Torture” project and NC Stop Torture Now encourage you to attend and add your voice to those supporting transparency and accountability and ensuring North Carolina is not used to facilitate torture and abuse.

SUMMARY:Presence is Power
DESCRIPTION:Join us to acquire some of the tools we need to show up as faithful witnesses in places of potential conflict. Trainers from Triangle based\, Ready-the-Ground\, will provide basic training on how to respond in volatile situations to help diffuse the tension. Whether violence is directed at us through verbal or physical channels\, there are things we can do to keep the situation from escalating. In these days when many of us feel called to show up in support of the causes we care about and to call attention to things we hope to change\, this kind of training helps prepare us to make a faithful witness for the cause of justice. \n  \nRegistration for this event is closed due to space restrictions. \nWhile the event is free\, a donation ($20 suggested) would be appreciated to help us offset expenses. After registering\, follow the link to the Council’s secure paypal site if you would like to donate. Donations will also be accepted at the event.

SUMMARY:One Nation Under Drones: Conference Against the Use of Drones in Warfare
DESCRIPTION:Military operations using drones are not heralded as victories or covered widely in the mainstream press. As a result\, the use of drones in warfare is largely invisible to people in the U.S. Unless a person actively seeks out information\, this form of war remains invisible to those in whose name the operations are carried out. This conference will feature speakers from different areas of expertise on the problems with and the ramifications of the use of drones in warfare. This is not a conference to debate the use of drones in warfare but a conference to encourage students\, scholars\, and citizens to be informed about problems related to the use of drones in warfare. This is a conference for people of different faiths and people who do not profess a faith\, people who already are concerned about the ramifications of using drones in warfare\, and people who are basically unaware of the use of drones in warfare. There will be time to eat together\, to ask questions of one another\, and to learn about further resources. \nEvents will be held in Durham at Trinity United Methodist Church and Duke Divinity School. The Council’s Peace Committee is a sponsor. Register here.
