SUMMARY:Better Together NC
DESCRIPTION:Join the LGBTQ Center of Durham\, Alamance County Community Partners\, and the North Carolina Council of Churches for a community conversation about how we can work together to resist hate and oppression in all its forms. Now more than ever\, local rural communities can come together in Orange county and discuss how we can create sanctuaries for everyone\, and ensure safety in our schools\, public spaces\, and homes. \nTogether we will talk about our shared and personal histories\, eat a meal and while working to create a shared future vision of what we want our communities to look like through art\, music\, movement\, and activism. \nWe know that North Carolina has some of the most active KKK/white supremacist organizations in the country. This event is an opportunity to come together\, build power\, and create sanctuaries for everyone. Our power lies in our ability to come together. We are better together.\n \nOur hopes for the day are to:\n-Connect local organizations\, families and individuals living in rural Orange county to one another; learn what is happening in your communities and how you can get involved\n-Share our stories\, resources and ideas\n-Create a vision around what creating sanctuaries in our communities can look like and how can we get there together.\n-Food and Fellowship\n-Engage in Art as Activism \nThis event is free and family friendly! SUMMARY:One Nation Under Drones: Conference Against the Use of Drones in Warfare
DESCRIPTION:Military operations using drones are not heralded as victories or covered widely in the mainstream press. As a result\, the use of drones in warfare is largely invisible to people in the U.S. Unless a person actively seeks out information\, this form of war remains invisible to those in whose name the operations are carried out. This conference will feature speakers from different areas of expertise on the problems with and the ramifications of the use of drones in warfare. This is not a conference to debate the use of drones in warfare but a conference to encourage students\, scholars\, and citizens to be informed about problems related to the use of drones in warfare. This is a conference for people of different faiths and people who do not profess a faith\, people who already are concerned about the ramifications of using drones in warfare\, and people who are basically unaware of the use of drones in warfare. There will be time to eat together\, to ask questions of one another\, and to learn about further resources. \nEvents will be held in Durham at Trinity United Methodist Church and Duke Divinity School. The Council’s Peace Committee is a sponsor. Register here.

SUMMARY:Justice Center Crucial Conversation: Gun Violence
DESCRIPTION:A year after the Charleston tragedy: Growing hope for saner anti-gun violence policies \nN.C. Policy Watch presents a special Crucial Conversation luncheon: \nRegister here \nIt’s been nearly a year since the horrific tragedy in Charleston\, South Carolina in which nine attendees at a Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church were shot down and murdered on June 17\, 2015. Sadly\, for many Americans\, the Charleston church shooting has quickly become lost in a seeming blizzard of such catastrophes. Sandy Hook\, Virginia\, Tech\, San Bernardino – the list of American mass shootings seems to go on without end. \nAnd yet\, as we approach the one year anniversary of Charleston\, there are frequent and significant flickers of life in the movement for saner gun laws. Not only does polling continue to indicate large\, growing and\, in some cases\, overwhelming public support for tougher and smarter laws\, there is clear evidence that the grassroots movement is finding significant new energy. Here in North Carolina\, we see this newfound energy and activism in the work of groups like North Carolinians Against Gun Violence and the North Carolina Council of Churches\, which will be sponsoring a “Stand Up Sabbath” in congregations throughout North Carolina on the weekend of June 17-19. \nJoin us as we discuss these and several other encouraging developments with: \nState Senator Floyd McKissick\, Jr. of Durham — Sen. McKissick is an out spoken for proponent smarter gun laws and was\, himself\, a gun violence victim at an earlier time in his life. \nRev. Kylon Middleton — Rev. Middleton pastors the Mount Zion AME Church in Charleston\, a sister church to Emanuel that stands just a few blocks away. He was a close personal friend of Rev. Clementa Pinckney\, who was murdered at Emanuel last June. \nRev. Jennifer Copeland — Rev. Copeland is the Executive Director of the North Carolina Council of Churches and one of the driving forces behind Stand Up Sabbath.

SUMMARY:"Ghosts of Johnston County" -- Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:This 35-minute documentary film tells the story of the ongoing efforts by a group of North Carolinians who\, for nearly ten years\, have been fighting to achieve accountability for the victims of U.S. sponsored torture during the “war on terror.” In 2005\, a number of investigative reports linked Aero Contractors Limited\, a private charter company based at the Johnston County Airport in Smithfield\, NC\, to the CIA’s controversial rendition\, detention and interrogation program. This airport played a key role in transporting dozens of men\, many of whom were innocent\, to third countries were they faced indefinite\, secret detention and torture. \n“Ghosts of Johnston County” offers a local perspective on this complex international issue. It is told through a combination of on-the-ground observational footage\, home video footage filmed by local activists\, archival materials\, and interviews that have been conducted with both activists and supporters of Aero Contractors alike. The film also features excerpts from a dialogue with a European survivor of the U.S. sponsored torture as well as commentary from the former lead prosecutor of the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center\, Col. Morris Davis. \nThe film screening will be followed by a discussion with the film’s co-director Eric Juth. Christina Cowger and Jessica Porta of the North Carolina Commission of Inquiry on Torture will also be present to discuss the effort currently underway to establish a truth commission to investigate North Carolina’s role in torture. \nThe Council is a co-sponsor.
