DESCRIPTION:On March 14-15\, 2023\, the North Carolina Supreme Court will rehear and likely re-decide two crucial voting rights victories in Harper v. Hall and Holmes v. Moore. These two cases — decided by the state Supreme Court just last year — struck down not only voter ID (proven to discriminate against Black voters) but also ruled partisan manipulation of our voting maps as unconstitutional for the first time in the history of the Old North State. Both were unequivocal victories for North Carolinians. \nNow\, urged on by Speaker Tim Moore and Senate Leader Phil Berger\, the high court has decided to bring these cases up again for yet another hearing and\, potentially\, a new outcome. The only thing that’s changed? The state Supreme Court\, which flipped partisan control after the November 2022 elections. DESCRIPTION:At the intersection of faith and art\, a new documentary called “Theirs Is The Kingdom” follows the rare creation of a fresco mural painted inside the sanctuary of the Haywood Street Congregation in Asheville\, NC. SUMMARY:Gun Violence Prevention and its Impact on Faith and Business Communities
DESCRIPTION:Join us\, MomsRising\, Action NC\, and North Carolinians Against Gun Violence (NCGV) for a virtual town hall on gun violence prevention and the impact it has on faith and business communities. Participants will learn how the business community and faith community are addressing the issues of pervasive gun violence and the need for gun safety policies. Our featured speakers include Bishop José McLoughlin\, Episcopal Diocese of Western NC; David Meeker\, co-owner of Trophy Brewing; and Major Rico Boyce\, Field Operations\, Raleigh Police Department. Participants will have time for breakout discussions following the panel discussion. \nClick here to register\nAbout the speakers:\nBishop José McLoughlin is bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina. He is the first Latino person to serve in this role. Before his election as bishop\, he served as the Canon to the Ordinary and Chief-of-Staff for the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma\, and prior to that served congregations in the dioceses of Southeast Florida and Virginia. Prior to his call to the priesthood\, José worked in the criminal justice field in Florida as a police officer and in the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington\, D.C.\, in various positions\, most recently as the special assistant/senior advisor to the assistant attorney general. \nDavid Meeker is co-owner of Trophy Brewing\, State of Beer\, and Carpenter Development. David is on the Board of the Raleigh Chamber\, Downtown Raleigh Alliance\, Common Cause NC\, Dix Park\, Dogwood Bank Advisory Board\, and Artspace. He is also on the Capital Campaign Committee for Healing Transitions\, a free detox and recovery center on Dix Park. David is a Raleigh native and lives in downtown Raleigh with his wife and two boys. \nMajor Rico Boyce has been with the Raleigh Police Department for 21 years. He is currently assigned as the Division Commander of the Field Operations Division (Patrol). Major Boyce has worked as a patrol officer in Southeast Raleigh\, a School Resource Officer at Southeast Raleigh High School\, a Gang Suppression Unit Officer\, a Patrol Sergeant\, a Patrol Lieutenant and prior to his recent promotion to Major he was the District Commander of the Southeast District. Major Boyce is from Charlotte\, NC and is a graduate of North Carolina Central University.

DESCRIPTION:This past year–and these past few weeks–has been particularly trying\, with our country and our state reeling from the impact of several lethal pandemics at once. Lately\, the emotional swing from the hopeful news\nof verdict in the trial of the murder of George Floyd to the devastating news of the killings of Ma’ Khia Bryant and Andrew Brown\, Jr\, has been nearly unbearable. Sadly\, these murders are representative of the violent racial injustices that plague our nation. Too often we must ask\, “How long will it be until justice rolls down like a mighty stream?” \nTo support you as you seek answers to that question while providing spiritual guidance and pastoral care for your congregations and communities\, the North Carolina Council of Churches invites you to a Midday Prayer Vigil for Courage during the National Day of Prayer on Thursday\, May 6. \nClick here to register.\nThe vigil will include prayers for you and the communities you serve\, special music and an inspirational message. \nAs Bishop Michael Curry said during an evening prayer service after verdict in Minneapolis\, the struggle must go on\, “until no human child of God is treated as anything less.” May this midday prayer service grant you courage for that struggle.

SUMMARY:No Justice No Peace: Confederate Monuments and the Fight for Racial Justice
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to Confederate monuments\, there is no common ground. Polarizing debates over their meaning have intensified into legislative maneuvering to preserve the statues\, legal battles to remove them\, and rowdy crowds taking matters into their own hands. These conflicts have raged for well over a century\, but they’ve never been as intense as they are today. \nJoin us and the NC Commission on Racial & Ethnic Disparities in the Criminal Justice System (NC CRED) for a discussion with Dr. Karen L. Cox\, author of No Common Ground: Confederate Monuments and the Ongoing Fight for Racial Justice. \nClick here to register. \nDr. Cox is an award-winning historian\, Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians\, and professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Cox will lead conversation on her book as we learn together and mobilize to take meaningful action. \n\nAbout the book \nIn this eye-opening narrative of the efforts to raise\, preserve\, protest\, and remove Confederate monuments\, Karen L. Cox depicts what these statues meant to those who erected them and how a movement arose to force a reckoning. She lucidly shows the forces that drove white southerners to construct beacons of white supremacy\, as well as the ways that antimonument sentiment\, largely stifled during the Jim Crow era\, returned with the civil rights movement and gathered momentum in the decades after the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Monument defenders responded with gerrymandering and “heritage” laws intended to block efforts to remove these statues\, but hard as they worked to preserve the Lost Cause vision of southern history\, civil rights activists\, Black elected officials\, and movements of ordinary people fought harder to take the story back. Timely\, accessible\, and essential\, No Common Ground is the story of the seemingly invincible stone sentinels that are just beginning to fall from their pedestals.

NCIPL & Eco-Justice Connection Program Coordinator\, Sarah Ogletree\, will also provide resources during the call to aid faith communities in considering a decolonized framework in their ministries.
