SUMMARY:Revival Reimagined East Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Patterned after the Great Awakening Revivals in America\, North Carolina has the unique opportunity to stoke religious fervor throughout the State and the nation. Radical evangelicalism is on its last leg in terms of popularity. The goal is to ensure that this fervor is not capitalized on and used for the benefit of Christian Nationalists. They are seeking to use religion to serve the needs of a minority group in North Carolina that largely represents the ideals of the past. \nWe believe that there is a brand of faith that supports the multiracial working class\, supports the obliteration of poverty\, supports reproductive justice\, and affirms people who exist in queer communities. \nWill you join We Are Down Home NC in their efforts to present progressive representations of faith to disengaged communities and mobilize a new electorate to vote in alignment with progressive faith values? If so\, click here to register.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an insightful discussion as we explore the landscape of Christian Nationalism in today’s society. Learn what Christian Nationalism is and its evolution over the past decade. Hear about the concepts of Dominionism and the 7 Mountains Mandate\, uncovering how these theological frameworks underpin movements like Project 2025. SUMMARY:BAD FAITH: Christian Nationalism’s Threat to Democracy in Wilmington
DESCRIPTION:On January 6\, 2021\, Americans witnessed an attack on the U.S. Capitol without precedent in our history. Armed militiamen and QAnon followers made headlines\, but among them were a sea of crosses and Christian flags\, rosaries and “Jesus Saves” signs. What motivated so many Christians to participate in this violent assault? \nJoin us for Social Hour at the Jengo’s Backyard Bar at 6:30pm and stay after the screening for a Q&A with special guest Nancy MacLean. \nNancy MacLean is the William H. Chafe Professor of History and Public Policy at Duke University\, and the author of several award-winning books\, most recently\, Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right’s Stealth Plan for America. A New York Times bestseller\, it was a finalist for the National Book Award and the winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Award in Current Affairs and the Lillian Smith Book Award for outstanding writing about the U.S. South. The Nation named it the “Most Valuable Book” of the year. In late 2023\, Democracy in Chains was updated with a new Preface. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:What's At State: Project 2025\, Christian Nationalism\, and the Future of North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Project 2025\, the much-talked about 900-page Heritage Foundation document\, is a detailed blueprint for our nation’s future\, with serious ramifications for all of us. The plan seeks to slash government agencies\, a slew of constitutional rights and protections for workers\, children\, the environment\, schools\, veterans and members of the LGBTQ-plus community. It’s not easy to talk about. But it’s important that every North Carolinian understands what’s at stake. \nIn this one-hour Zoom\, Kyle Spencer\, a longtime journalist\, New York Times contributor\, UNC-grad and the author of Raising Them Right: The Untold Story of America’s Ultraconservative Youth Movement And Its Plot for Power – helps explain why Project 2025 matters\, how it relates to Christian Nationalism and how we can talk to friends\, family\, and our parishioners about what it means for all of us. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Waiting With Purpose: Standing with our Undocumented Neighbors this Advent
DESCRIPTION:Mondays\, December 2 – 23\, Noon – 1 p.m.\nOnline \nThe hallmark of Advent is preparation while waiting. We wait for the incarnation by preparing for its reality\, ensuring that when the nativity occurs\, we are ready. Similarly\, as we await new procedures directed at our undocumented neighbors\, we must prepare rather than wait passively. \nDuring Advent\, the Council will offer information sessions every Monday at noon to prepare ourselves to stand with our undocumented neighbors\, over 360\,000 of whom reside in North Carolina. Many of these neighbors live in households with family members who are U.S. citizens or those with legal documents allowing them to stay. How can we prepare to help these families stay together? \nJoin us during Advent as we wait and prepare. Register now to participate live\, or to receive the recordings after the event. \nMondays\, noon – 1 p.m. in December \n\nWeek Two: December 9\, 2024\nWeek Three: December 16\, 2024\nWeek Four: December 23\, 2024\n\nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Addressing Extreme Heat through Faithful Community Resilience
DESCRIPTION:As extreme heat intensifies across the Carolinas\, communities face rising energy costs\, disproportionate health risks\, and increasing pressure on local infrastructure. Faith-based organizations have long played a vital role in responding to crises in our region\, providing critical support and advocating for systemic change. They are uniquely positioned to partner with others on advancing communities’ heat resilience. \nJoin us for a public conversation exploring the intersection of faith\, energy justice\, and climate resilience. Hosted by Ashley Ward of Duke University’s Heat Policy Innovation Hub\, this conversation will feature Pastor Neil Bernard (New Wine Christian Fellowship)\, Angella Dunston (Warren County Environmental Action Team)\, and Reverend Leo Woodberry (Kingdom Living Temple and New Alpha Community Development). \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:Screening of American Coup: Wilmington 1898
DESCRIPTION:Join Umstead Park United Church of Christ for a screening of American Coup: Wilmington 1898. This powerful documentary is sparking critical conversations about the legacy of white supremacy and the importance of preserving democracy. The film uncovers the untold story of the only successful coup d’état in U.S. history\, when white supremacists overthrew Wilmington’s multiracial government in 1898. This pivotal event reshaped the political and social landscape of North Carolina and the United States\, but its history was suppressed for decades. Now\, the film sheds light on this dark chapter to inspire meaningful conversations across communities. \nThere will be a Q&A session after the film where educators and leaders from social justice organizations in the community will discuss lessons from the film and ways that audience members can take action on racial justice issues. Both the film and the Q&A session will be approximately one hour each. \nClick here to register.
