The movement is made up of more than 125 North Carolina NAACP branches\, youth councils\, and college chapters from across the state and members of over 200 other social justice organizations. \nJoin us for the pre-march rally and people’s assembly at 9 a.m. near the corner of Wilmington and South Streets near Shaw University. \nMarch begins at 10 a.m.

SUMMARY:The Color of Public Education: Laws that Divide Us\, Hopes that Unite Us

You are still welcome to register if you have not already done so and attend Rothstein’s presentation\, but we will unfortunately not be able to provide you with dinner. \n  \nJoin us for an evening with Richard Rothstein\, former columnist for the New York Times\, a research associate at the Economic Policy Institute\, as well as a Fellow at the Thurgood Marshall Institute of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Rothstein\, author of The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America\, has spent years documenting the evidence that the government not merely ignored discriminatory practices in the residential sphere\, but promoted them. The impact has been devastating for generations of African-Americans who were denied the right to live where they wanted to live\, and raise and school their children where they could flourish most successfully. While the Fair Housing Act of 1968 provided modest enforcement to prevent future discrimination\, it did nothing to reverse or undo a century’s worth of state-sanctioned violations of the Bill of Rights\, particularly the Thirteenth Amendment which banned treating former slaves as second-class citizens. So the structural conditions established by 20th century federal policy endure to this day. \nRichard Rothstein will present his research and facilitate a workshop with public school advocates\, parents\, teachers\, and anyone who has a stake in truly integrated\, well-funded public schools in North Carolina (that means everyone). This 90-minute documentary takes viewers through the tumultuous 2013–14 school year\, into the world of what is now called education “reform.” In Philadelphia and other big cities\, public education – starved of resources – hangs in the balance. NC is at a crossroads as we see more and more privatization of our public schools. \nPanel discussion with public education leaders will follow the film along with Q&A from the audience. DESCRIPTION:The Liberating Theologies conference is a one-day experience exploring varying theologies with an emphasis on liberation and inclusion for the oppressed and marginalized. \nNorth Carolina has been a political\, social justice\, and religious battleground in the United States for decades. Regressive views on religion\, the LGBTQ community and other marginalized groups have harmed many of civil rights advances. There is a need in North Carolina to make a bold statement about intersectional justice; and the importance of restorative justice for those in the LGBTQ community that have been religiously ostracized. \nThis conference is also proposed in honor of Dr. James H. Cone\, to celebrate his historic contribution to the theology world\, in particular black liberation theology. The theme\, “Liberating The Gospels” explores varying theologies with emphasis on liberation and inclusion. Theologies to be explored: Womanist Theology\, Queer Theology\, Black Liberation Theology and Emerging Theology each with an inclusivity framework. \nClick here for more information and to purchase tickets. DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to an interfaith gathering to remember the victims of the CIA’s rendition and torture program.  The vigils will offer an opportunity to hear speakers from several faith traditions\, meditate and to join with fellow citizens who believe North Carolina has a responsibility to call for transparency and accountability for those who were transported using state facilities and to ensure this dark period in history never repeats. \nAero Contractors\, headquartered at the Johnston County Airport\, was responsible for secretly rendering at least 49 people between 2001 and 2004.  The rendition experience included beatings\, being stripped\, diapered\, drugged\, and loaded onto Aero’s jets for flights to torture sites. There\, detainees were subjected to water torture\, prolonged painful stress positions\, sexual humiliation\, and much more  N.C taxes provided the two airports in Smithfield and Kinston that were home to the jets and their personnel.  \nThe North Carolina Commission of Inquiry on Torture (NCCIT) will release its report on the morning of September 27\, 2018. The seminal report is released after an 18 month inquiry and renews the call for a governmental investigation into these illegal and immoral activities. \nThe NC Council of Churches “NC No Torture” project and NC Stop Torture Now encourage you to attend and add your voice to those supporting transparency and accountability and ensuring North Carolina is not used to facilitate torture and abuse.

SUMMARY:WNC March for Overdose Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us in bringing the local community together for International Overdose Awareness Day. \nWe’ll gather at the Old Armory in Waynesville at 3:30 p.m. to share our grief over the lives that we have lost\, raise awareness about the prevention of overdose deaths\, and reduce the stigma that surrounds drug use. There will be music\, art\, and information. At 4:30 p.m. we will kick-off a Second Line March\, where we will walk in a parade joined by live music\, carrying photos of loved ones we want to lift up and items that represent their spirit and their love. The march will conclude at the Courthouse in Waynesville\, where we will hear stories from people impacted by overdose in our community. We will also have a “lifeline” that will feature the names of all of our lost loved ones. \nInformation will be available to the community about how we can reduce the harm of the overdose crisis here at home and how we can work together to save lives. \nCo-Sponsors for this event include: Down Home NC\, NC Harm Reduction Coalition\, and Appalachian Community Services.

SUMMARY:Liberating Theologies Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:The Liberating Theologies conference\, presented by The Freedom Center for Social Justice\, is a one-day experience exploring varying theologies with an emphasis on liberation and inclusion for the oppressed and marginalized. \nNorth Carolina has been a political\, social justice and religious battleground in the United States for decades. Regressive views on religion\, the LGBTQ community and other marginalized groups have harmed many of the civil rights advances.  There is a need in our state to make a bold statement about intersectional justice and the importance of restorative justice for those in the LGBTQ community that have been religiously ostracized. \nThis conference is also proposed in honor of Dr. James H. Cone\, to celebrate his historic contribution to the theology world\, in particular\, black liberation theology. The theme\, “Liberating The Gospels” explores varying theologies with emphasis on liberation and inclusion. Theologies to be explored: Womanist Theology\, Queer Theology\, Black Liberation Theology and Emerging Theology each with an inclusivity framework. \nTickets can be purchased here at the early bird rate of $35 until August 31. After that the price increases to $65. Student tickets are available for $12. Co-sponsors for this event include the Union for Affirming Christians\, Charlotte Clergy Coalition for Justice\, NC NAACP\, and MeckMin.

DESCRIPTION:As people of faith\, we believe that immigrant families are precious to God\, but recent news reveals just how far our government is straying from this principle- families being separated at the border\, individuals seeking sanctuary as their last option\, asylum seekers being turned away\, and thousands being detained and deported. These events are discouraging and disheartening as we witness our neighbors worry that they will be deported from their only safe home and forced to leave their families. \nThe Council is partnering with Faith in Public Life for a free webinar discussing recent policy changes and what we can do about them. Jennie Belle\, Faith Community Organizer with Church World Service\, will speak on the current Sanctuary Movement that is continuously growing as more unjust immigration policies are implemented. She will also share some of the recent success stories of guests coming out of sanctuary. Doug Long\, pastor of Umstead Park UCC (a host sanctuary church)\, will share his insight on best practices when hosting someone in sanctuary.
