SUMMARY:NC No Torture Prayer Vigil - Greensboro
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to a gathering of people of faith to remember victims of the U.S. torture program.  The vigil will offer an opportunity to meditate\, hear speakers from several traditions\, and join voices\, hands\, and hearts with others who believe North Carolina has a responsibility to those who were transported for torture in NC jets. \nAero Contractors\, headquartered at the Johnston County Airport\, was responsible for secretly transporting at least 49 people between 2001 and 2004.  For “renditions\,” these prisoners were beaten\, stripped\, diapered\, drugged\, and loaded onto Aero’s jets for flights to torture sites. There\, they were subjected to water tortures\, prolonged painful stress positions\, sexual humiliation\, and much more.  NC taxes provided the airports in Smithfield and Kinston where the “torture taxis” and their pilots were based. \nThe NC Commission of Inquiry on Torture (NCCIT) is to release its report on the morning of September 27\, 2018.  Based on its research\, including two days of victim and expert testimony in November 2017\, the Commission will renew the call for an official investigation of these activities.   \nThe NC Council of Churches and NC Stop Torture Now encourage you to attend\, learn the NCCIT’s recommendations\, and add your voice to the call for them to be carried out.

SUMMARY:Liberating Theologies Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:The Liberating Theologies conference\, presented by The Freedom Center for Social Justice\, is a one-day experience exploring varying theologies with an emphasis on liberation and inclusion for the oppressed and marginalized. \nNorth Carolina has been a political\, social justice and religious battleground in the United States for decades. Regressive views on religion\, the LGBTQ community and other marginalized groups have harmed many of the civil rights advances.  There is a need in our state to make a bold statement about intersectional justice and the importance of restorative justice for those in the LGBTQ community that have been religiously ostracized. \nThis conference is also proposed in honor of Dr. James H. Cone\, to celebrate his historic contribution to the theology world\, in particular\, black liberation theology. The theme\, “Liberating The Gospels” explores varying theologies with emphasis on liberation and inclusion. Theologies to be explored: Womanist Theology\, Queer Theology\, Black Liberation Theology and Emerging Theology each with an inclusivity framework. \nTickets can be purchased here at the early bird rate of $35 until August 31. After that the price increases to $65. Student tickets are available for $12. Co-sponsors for this event include the Union for Affirming Christians\, Charlotte Clergy Coalition for Justice\, NC NAACP\, and MeckMin.

SUMMARY:Defending Families and Human Dignity: An Immigration Messaging and Strategy Training Webinar
DESCRIPTION:As people of faith\, we believe that immigrant families are precious to God\, but recent news reveals just how far our government is straying from this principle- families being separated at the border\, individuals seeking sanctuary as their last option\, asylum seekers being turned away\, and thousands being detained and deported. These events are discouraging and disheartening as we witness our neighbors worry that they will be deported from their only safe home and forced to leave their families. \nThe Council is partnering with Faith in Public Life for a free webinar discussing recent policy changes and what we can do about them. Jennie Belle\, Faith Community Organizer with Church World Service\, will speak on the current Sanctuary Movement that is continuously growing as more unjust immigration policies are implemented. She will also share some of the recent success stories of guests coming out of sanctuary. Doug Long\, pastor of Umstead Park UCC (a host sanctuary church)\, will share his insight on best practices when hosting someone in sanctuary. Juana Tobar Ortega\, a woman currently in sanctuary\, will also share her own experience about how she came to be in sanctuary and what life looks like for her now. \n  \nClick here to register today!

SUMMARY:US-Cuba Friendship Caravan
DESCRIPTION:This event will focus on the disastrous impact of the US blockade on the people of Cuba and the need for a new relationship between the two countries. During the Obama administration a hopeful process was begun but under the current administration those positive steps are being rolled back. It is for this reason justice-minded people in the US must redouble our efforts to create a fair and equitable relationship between our two countries. We must work together if we want economic and cultural relations to flourish and benefit the people of both our countries. \nThis event will be held at the Community Family Life & Recreation Center at Lyon Park in Durham. \nSponsored by the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO) and Pastors for Peace.

SUMMARY:Questions You Asked: Further Conversations on Domestic Violence\, Social Justice\, and Faith Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Last month the Council co-sponsored a webinar entitled\, “Uncovering the Roots of Violence: New Perspectives on Domestic Violence\, Social Justice\, and Faith.” The webinar brought together three anti-violence activists to share their perspectives and explore what it really takes to end the pandemic violence against women\, children\, and other vulnerable peoples. There were a number of great questions that participants asked\, but the panelists were unable to answer because of time constraints. Join us for this free webinar as the conversation continues on specific ways we can work together to change cultures of violence in our homes\, our places of worship\, and our communities. \nIf you missed the first webinar you can view it for free by clicking here. \nRegister for this follow-up webinar by clicking here. \nWant to listen in\, but can’t make the live webinar? Register anyways and you will receive a link to the full session recording. For more information\, please contact Ann Amberg at annamberg.cps@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Backpack Full of Cash Documentary Screening - Raleigh
DESCRIPTION:Narrated by Matt Damon\, Backpack Full of Cash explores the growing privatization of public schools and the resulting impact on America’s most vulnerable children. This 90-minute documentary takes viewers through the tumultuous 2013–14 school year\, into the world of what is now called education “reform.” In Philadelphia and other big cities\, public education – starved of resources – hangs in the balance. NC is at a crossroads as we see more and more privatization of our public schools. \nA panel discussion with public education leaders will follow the film along with Q&A from audience. \nThe filmmakers are part of the team that made the award-winning 4-part PBS series\, SCHOOL: The Story of Public Education\, narrated by Meryl Streep. Directed by: Sarah Mondale. Produced by: Vera Aronow and Sarah Mondale. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Council\, Public Schools First NC\, North Carolina Association of Educators\, and North Carolina State University Libraries.

SUMMARY:Faith in Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Please join Democracy NC\, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State\, and the NC Council of Churches in rebuilding and defending “Faith in Democracy.” Each session will include answers to the following questions: \nLegally\, what can faith communities and faith leaders discuss about the social/political issues? Morally\, what are leaders feeling compelled to do? What are the real risks\, especially to minority faith and non-faith groups? How is this work rooted in standing up for racial justice? \nWhy is almost all current state and federal legislation so extreme? How does it threaten our own religious freedom? \nHow can leaders enable their communities\, both inside and outside of the church\, to see “political” issues through the lens of faith and become advocates for the good of all\, especially for “the least of these”? What does meaningful\, ecumenical coalition look like? \nRegister here.
