SUMMARY:Backpack Full of Cash Documentary Screening - Raleigh
DESCRIPTION:Narrated by Matt Damon\, Backpack Full of Cash explores the growing privatization of public schools and the resulting impact on America’s most vulnerable children. This 90-minute documentary takes viewers through the tumultuous 2013–14 school year\, into the world of what is now called education “reform.” In Philadelphia and other big cities\, public education – starved of resources – hangs in the balance. NC is at a crossroads as we see more and more privatization of our public schools. \nA panel discussion with public education leaders will follow the film along with Q&A from audience. \nThe filmmakers are part of the team that made the award-winning 4-part PBS series\, SCHOOL: The Story of Public Education\, narrated by Meryl Streep. Directed by: Sarah Mondale. Produced by: Vera Aronow and Sarah Mondale. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Council\, Public Schools First NC\, North Carolina Association of Educators\, and North Carolina State University Libraries.

SUMMARY:Faith in Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Please join Democracy NC\, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State\, and the NC Council of Churches in rebuilding and defending “Faith in Democracy.” Each session will include answers to the following questions: \nLegally\, what can faith communities and faith leaders discuss about the social/political issues? Morally\, what are leaders feeling compelled to do? What are the real risks\, especially to minority faith and non-faith groups? How is this work rooted in standing up for racial justice? \nWhy is almost all current state and federal legislation so extreme? How does it threaten our own religious freedom? \nHow can leaders enable their communities\, both inside and outside of the church\, to see “political” issues through the lens of faith and become advocates for the good of all\, especially for “the least of these”? What does meaningful\, ecumenical coalition look like? \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Fair Courts Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:At noon of Wednesday\, January 10\, the NC General Assembly will convene for a session in which judicial reform is expected to be a hot topic. Legislators conspicuously have been weighing an overhaul of the state’s method of choosing judges. The process for decades has been through election by the voters. Progressive reforms made those elections non-partisan\, but the legislature recently has restored party labels to ballots in judicial races. Now\, some top legislators are angling toward doing away with those elections altogether in favor of an appointive system. Join us to protest proposed changes that would affect the independence of the state’s judiciary. \n  \n11 a.m.-noon: Press Conference\, Bicentennial Plaza\, 1 East Edenton Street\nNoon-1 p.m.: Teach-In and Training\, NCGA Auditorium\, 16 West Jones Street\n1 p.m.-5 p.m.: Lawmakers Meetings\, Attend Special Session\, and Rally for Fair Courts \n  \nPlease note that rides are available from locations across the state\, and that information can be found here. \nPlease join us for all of the day\, or part of it\, as we make clear that we believe our judges should be fair\, independent\, and removed from politics. \nCo-sponsors: Common Cause\, Democracy NC\, NC NAACP\, NC Voters for Clean Elections\, and Progress NC

SUMMARY:Presence is Power
DESCRIPTION:Join us to acquire some of the tools we need to show up as faithful witnesses in places of potential conflict. Trainers from Triangle based\, Ready-the-Ground\, will provide basic training on how to respond in volatile situations to help diffuse the tension. Whether violence is directed at us through verbal or physical channels\, there are things we can do to keep the situation from escalating. In these days when many of us feel called to show up in support of the causes we care about and to call attention to things we hope to change\, this kind of training helps prepare us to make a faithful witness for the cause of justice. \n  \nRegistration for this event is closed due to space restrictions. \nWhile the event is free\, a donation ($20 suggested) would be appreciated to help us offset expenses. After registering\, follow the link to the Council’s secure paypal site if you would like to donate. Donations will also be accepted at the event.

SUMMARY:One Nation Under Drones: Conference Against the Use of Drones in Warfare
DESCRIPTION:Military operations using drones are not heralded as victories or covered widely in the mainstream press. As a result\, the use of drones in warfare is largely invisible to people in the U.S. Unless a person actively seeks out information\, this form of war remains invisible to those in whose name the operations are carried out. This conference will feature speakers from different areas of expertise on the problems with and the ramifications of the use of drones in warfare. This is not a conference to debate the use of drones in warfare but a conference to encourage students\, scholars\, and citizens to be informed about problems related to the use of drones in warfare. This is a conference for people of different faiths and people who do not profess a faith\, people who already are concerned about the ramifications of using drones in warfare\, and people who are basically unaware of the use of drones in warfare. There will be time to eat together\, to ask questions of one another\, and to learn about further resources. \nEvents will be held in Durham at Trinity United Methodist Church and Duke Divinity School. The Council’s Peace Committee is a sponsor. Register here.
