SUMMARY:Sanctuary E-Course
DESCRIPTION:A growing movement of immigrant and faith communities have committed to doing what Congress and the Administration refuse to do: protect and stand with immigrants facing deportation. However\, many congregations have questions. Who is seeking sanctuary? Who leads sanctuary? How do faith communities declare sanctuary? \nTo answer these questions\, the NC Religious Coalition for Justice for Immigrants has created a brand new six-week E-course. Each week\, you will receive a different course in your inbox. This course has been updated from the previous course to include new videos\, podcasts\, and readings about sanctuary\, and includes a new week focused specifically on alternatives to physical sanctuary. \nThe cost is $5 and the course is available for 12 weeks. Access expires six weeks after the final lesson. \nTo register\, you must create an account here and follow the appropriate steps. For questions\, email Jennie Belle at jennie@ncchurches.org. \nRegistration closes January 3.

SUMMARY:Presence is Power
DESCRIPTION:Join us to acquire some of the tools we need to show up as faithful witnesses in places of potential conflict. Trainers from Triangle based\, Ready-the-Ground\, will provide basic training on how to respond in volatile situations to help diffuse the tension. Whether violence is directed at us through verbal or physical channels\, there are things we can do to keep the situation from escalating. In these days when many of us feel called to show up in support of the causes we care about and to call attention to things we hope to change\, this kind of training helps prepare us to make a faithful witness for the cause of justice. \n  \nRegistration for this event is closed due to space restrictions. \nWhile the event is free\, a donation ($20 suggested) would be appreciated to help us offset expenses. After registering\, follow the link to the Council’s secure paypal site if you would like to donate. Donations will also be accepted at the event.

SUMMARY:Better Together NC
DESCRIPTION:Join the LGBTQ Center of Durham\, Alamance County Community Partners\, and the North Carolina Council of Churches for a community conversation about how we can work together to resist hate and oppression in all its forms. Now more than ever\, local rural communities can come together in Orange county and discuss how we can create sanctuaries for everyone\, and ensure safety in our schools\, public spaces\, and homes. \nTogether we will talk about our shared and personal histories\, eat a meal and while working to create a shared future vision of what we want our communities to look like through art\, music\, movement\, and activism. \nWe know that North Carolina has some of the most active KKK/white supremacist organizations in the country. We also know that North Carolina has historically been the bedrock of multi-issue organizing and coalition building that brings those of us together that are committed to social\, economic and environmental justice. This event is an opportunity to come together\, build power\, and create sanctuaries for everyone. Our power lies in our ability to come together. We are better together.\n \nOur hopes for the day are to:\n-Connect local organizations\, families and individuals living in rural Orange county to one another; learn what is happening in your communities and how you can get involved\n-Share our stories\, resources and ideas\n-Create a vision around what creating sanctuaries in our communities can look like and how can we get there together.\n-Food and Fellowship\n-Engage in Art as Activism \nThis event is free and family friendly! There will be locally catered food\, childcare and children’s activities\, as well as Spanish and ASL interpretation available. SUMMARY:One Nation Under Drones: Conference Against the Use of Drones in Warfare
DESCRIPTION:Military operations using drones are not heralded as victories or covered widely in the mainstream press. As a result\, the use of drones in warfare is largely invisible to people in the U.S. Unless a person actively seeks out information\, this form of war remains invisible to those in whose name the operations are carried out. This conference will feature speakers from different areas of expertise on the problems with and the ramifications of the use of drones in warfare. This is not a conference to debate the use of drones in warfare but a conference to encourage students\, scholars\, and citizens to be informed about problems related to the use of drones in warfare. This is a conference for people of different faiths and people who do not profess a faith\, people who already are concerned about the ramifications of using drones in warfare\, and people who are basically unaware of the use of drones in warfare. There will be time to eat together\, to ask questions of one another\, and to learn about further resources. \nEvents will be held in Durham at Trinity United Methodist Church and Duke Divinity School. The Council’s Peace Committee is a sponsor. Register here.

SUMMARY:Faith in Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Please join Democracy NC\, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State\, and the NC Council of Churches in rebuilding and defending “Faith in Democracy.” Each session will include answers to the following questions: \nLegally\, what can faith communities and faith leaders discuss about the social/political issues? Morally\, what are leaders feeling compelled to do? What are the real risks\, especially to minority faith and non-faith groups? How is this work rooted in standing up for racial justice? \nWhy is almost all current state and federal legislation so extreme? How does it threaten our own religious freedom? \nHow can leaders enable their communities\, both inside and outside of the church\, to see “political” issues through the lens of faith and become advocates for the good of all\, especially for “the least of these”? What does meaningful\, ecumenical coalition look like? \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Matters: Testimony and Best Practices
DESCRIPTION:In light of recent events involving the deportation and fears of our immigrant brothers and sisters throughout the state\, the NC Council of Churches’ annual Faith & Immigration Summit will focus on the topic of sanctuary this year. Our families\, friends\, neighbors and co-workers are terrified about being detained and deported; profiled because of their religion\, race or political beliefs; losing their health coverage; and facing hate and discrimination. Learn why congregations across the region and country are choosing to support and provide sanctuary\, what it means in practice\, and how to be successful at “Sanctuary Matters: Testimony and Best Practices.” \nSunday\, September 17 from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Community United Church of Christ will host an in-person\, half-day training for congregations and clergy leaders interested in providing support and sanctuary for vulnerable individuals in North Carolina. We will discuss the many ways that your congregation can stand up against hate and dehumanization at this moment. Topics will include testimony from people who have been in sanctuary and congregations that have opened their doors as sanctuaries as well as training for congregations that are in the discernment process. The keynote speaker is Rev. Noel Andersen\, Grassroots Organizer for Church World Service out of the Washington DC office. Time will be provided for congregations to network by geographic or faith affinity. The cost is $5. \nRegistration is available here.

SUMMARY:NC Justice Center 2017 Defenders of Justice Awards
DESCRIPTION:Jesus mentions when discussing faith-based activity\, “Do not sound a trumpet before you…so that [you] might be praised” (Matthew 6:2) and advises that those who work toward the Reign of God do so regardless of reward. More often than not\, that’s exactly what we do here at the NC Council of Churches\, but this week is different. This week we learned that the North Carolina Justice Center has selected us to receive their Defender of Justice Award for Grassroots Empowerment. We are honored and humbled to be in the fine company of other recipients this year such as Representative David Price\, one of the defenders as a Lifetime Champion\, and Anita Earls\, one of the defenders for Litigation. \nBesides being in such stellar awardee company\, it’s deeply meaningful to garner this recognition from our allies at the NC Justice Center. Their tireless work to bring transparency to the legislative policies of our state helps inform the work we do to refract these issues through the lens of faith. \nWhile the work will continue regardless of sounding trumpets or award recognition\, we are grateful to be noticed at such a time as this when our purpose has never been more clear or more urgent. So\, please join us\, just this once\, as we toot our own horn!
