SUMMARY:Sanctuary Matters: Testimony and Best Practices
DESCRIPTION:In light of recent events involving the deportation and fears of our immigrant brothers and sisters throughout the state\, the NC Council of Churches’ annual Faith & Immigration Summit will focus on the topic of sanctuary this year. Our families\, friends\, neighbors and co-workers are terrified about being detained and deported; profiled because of their religion\, race or political beliefs; losing their health coverage; and facing hate and discrimination. Learn why congregations across the region and country are choosing to support and provide sanctuary\, what it means in practice\, and how to be successful at “Sanctuary Matters: Testimony and Best Practices.” \nSunday\, September 17 from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Community United Church of Christ will host an in-person\, half-day training for congregations and clergy leaders interested in providing support and sanctuary for vulnerable individuals in North Carolina. We will discuss the many ways that your congregation can stand up against hate and dehumanization at this moment. Topics will include testimony from people who have been in sanctuary and congregations that have opened their doors as sanctuaries as well as training for congregations that are in the discernment process. The keynote speaker is Rev. Noel Andersen\, Grassroots Organizer for Church World Service out of the Washington DC office. Time will be provided for congregations to network by geographic or faith affinity. The cost is $5. \nRegistration is available here.

SUMMARY:NC Justice Center 2017 Defenders of Justice Awards
DESCRIPTION:Jesus mentions when discussing faith-based activity\, “Do not sound a trumpet before you…so that [you] might be praised” (Matthew 6:2) and advises that those who work toward the Reign of God do so regardless of reward. More often than not\, that’s exactly what we do here at the NC Council of Churches\, but this week is different. This week we learned that the North Carolina Justice Center has selected us to receive their Defender of Justice Award for Grassroots Empowerment. We are honored and humbled to be in the fine company of other recipients this year such as Representative David Price\, one of the defenders as a Lifetime Champion\, and Anita Earls\, one of the defenders for Litigation. \nBesides being in such stellar awardee company\, it’s deeply meaningful to garner this recognition from our allies at the NC Justice Center. Their tireless work to bring transparency to the legislative policies of our state helps inform the work we do to refract these issues through the lens of faith. \nWhile the work will continue regardless of sounding trumpets or award recognition\, we are grateful to be noticed at such a time as this when our purpose has never been more clear or more urgent. So\, please join us\, just this once\, as we toot our own horn!

SUMMARY:Sanctuary E-Course
DESCRIPTION:President Trump’s recent executive actions impacting refugees and immigrants have faithful people increasingly interested in how they might support our sisters and brothers being impacted. Court decisions have offered a reprieve\, but the administration’s determination to make many newcomers to our country scapegoats and the targets of misguided hostility has only emphasized their vulnerability. \nJennie Belle\, Program Director for Immigration and Farmworkers\, has been fielding questions about the issue. To help those who want to learn more\, she has developed a five-week e-course\,  beginning March 13\, which she describes in the video below. In addition\, Jennie was recently interviewed by our friends at Policy Watch. Listen to what she had to say here. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Second Annual Advocacy Training: Public Schools Our Students Deserve
DESCRIPTION:The NC Public Education Working Group is a grassroots collaboration of citizens (including teachers) that support Pre-K-12 public education in NC.  We work to educate\, inform\, engage and train citizens to support and advocate for a strong public education system. \nThere are many reasons to be concerned about our public schools after this election cycle has ended and we look to the future. State and federal leaders continue to defund public education\, ignore the growth in school segregation and child poverty and the related inequality of opportunity. Educators\, parents and students worry that the hostile national discourse and policies will negatively affect our schools and our students. \nWhile the 2016 election results will change many things\, we know that to have the Schools our Students Deserve\, we must be organized in our approach and we must be more effective in our advocacy work. \nPlease join us in Raleigh\, NC for the 2nd Annual Schools Our Students Deserve conference that will specifically focus on how public schools must be safe places for all children. Participants will have the opportunity to: \n\nLearn more about the upcoming campaign to advocate for Schools Our Students Deserve\nGain the skills necessary to bring the campaign back to your home county and begin the work\nBuild relationships and get plugged into a coordinated effort of public education advocates throughout the state\n\nThis advocacy training workshop called: “Public Schools Our Children Deserve: Second Annual Gathering” on February 11\, 2017 at the offices of the North Carolina Association of Educators. The advocacy training will start promptly at 1 PM and ends at 4 PM. The Council is a co-sponsor of this event. \nREGISTRATION is required and seating is limited.  Registering allows us to plan space\, print our materials and order lunches. Please email us any diet restrictions that you have ASAP – also let us know if you do not want a lunch to help us be cost-effective with our resources. If you have childcare need\, please indicate. \nPlease register now.  We will be developing the full agenda and sharing at the beginning of January.  Our goal is to have 1-2 persons from each county in NC\, so we may have to limit large numbers from any one county. \nIf you register and then cannot attend\, please let us know so that someone can take your place (info@publicschoolsfirstnc.org). \nMany of you attended last year and have continued to work with us after the training!  We look forward to meeting with you again and renewing our work for schools our students deserve! \nQuestions? Please email info@publicschoolsfirstnc.org or call 919-576-0655. \nOur Vision: \nPublic Schools Our Children Deserve are: \n\nFully funded\nDiverse\, integrated by income and race\nPlaces that connect young people to their community\nPlaces with high tech tools reflect the world students will work in\nInviting spaces\, welcoming to all in ways that encourage collaboration\nStaffed by loving adults in the building who have high expectations for all\, including students\, colleagues\, teachers\, and leadership\nChild centered with curriculum that focuses on four Cs—creativity\, communication\, critical thinking and collaboration\nHubs for the community with activities beyond the regular school day\, for adults and children to learn skills\nInterdisciplinary in their teaching\nEngaged with Parents in Partnership\nSupportive of teachers\, allowing a return to the teachable moment\, granting flexibility for instruction\, and having trust in teachers\nSafe\, affirming learning environments\nEngaged in the civic life of the community and our democracy

SUMMARY:Webinar: Loving our Immigrant and Refugee Neighbors in a New Administration
DESCRIPTION:On January 20\, 2017\, the Trump administration begins\, and we know that this represents a serious danger for our immigrant and refugee communities. To protect the rights and dignity of immigrants and refugees\, to keep their families intact\, and to make the United States into a welcoming place for all migrants requires all of us working together to take action. \nPlease join us for the webinar “Loving Our Neighbors in a New Administration.” This webinar will begin with updates from Christy Williams of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network about what to expect in the coming weeks and months and how that could affect immigrants and refugees both at a federal and state level. Then\, we will offer concrete ways you and your congregation can speak out and take action alongside our newest immigrant and refugee neighbors. After this we will ask participants to end the call by filling out a short survey about where they are located and how they would like to be involved based on the opportunities offered. It is our hope that we can create coalitions of people of faith who want to work together to create relationships and spaces that will protect\, serve\, and welcome all of our neighbors. We cannot wait to see what could happen in the coming weeks and months. Instead\, we must be proactive and continue to build a powerful movement that is driven locally and organized across North Carolina. Please join us and share with others in your congregation.

SUMMARY:Ten Thousand Villages Shop for a Cause — Asheville
DESCRIPTION:Three of North Carolina’s Ten Thousand Villages stores are offering shoppers the chance to give twice this holiday season. The stores in Asheville\, Greensboro\, and Cary are holding Shop for a Cause events to benefit the NC Council of Churches. A portion of the proceeds raised during designated shopping periods at each store will be donated to the Council to continue our work for unity\, justice\, and peace. Council staff and volunteers will host the events\, so join us for the fellowship\, as well. \nTen Thousand Villages is a network of fair trade stores\, dealing directly with artisans around the world and selling their wares at prices that offer a fair wage. It connects individual entrepreneurs in developing countries with market opportunities in North America. Ten Thousand Villages has been associated with the Mennonite Central Committee for its entire history.
