DESCRIPTION:The Council along with EqualityNC and the Equality Federation are bringing together three speakers to look at the ethical implications of HB2 for people of faith. \nThey are: \nThe Rev. Dr. David Gushee\, a leading Christian ethicist and moral voice in the evangelical movement who currently serves as Vice President of the American Academy of Religion and incoming President-Elect of the Society for Christian Ethics. He is a professor of Christian Ethics and Director of the Center for Theology and Public Life at Mercer University in Atlanta. \nThe Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman\, Senior Pastor of St. Phillip AME Zion Church in Greensboro and the Executive Director of Clinton’s Corner of Catawba Community Development Corporation\, which deals primarily with the plight of those in the throes of poverty. He is third vice president of the NC NAACP\, a staunch LGBTQ advocate\, and president-elect of the Council. \nWilliam S. Meyer\, an associate clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center where he has worked for 30 years. He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work and has written and spoken publicly about the psychological and spiritual harms faced by LGBTQ individuals. \nThe public is invited\, and admission is free.

For over 40 years\, José Galvez has used black and white film to create a powerful and unparalleled historical record of the Latino experience in America. His compelling work\, done with respect\, pride and no pretense\, captures the beauty of daily life. For José\, photographing the lives of Latinos is not a one-time project or “current passion” but a lifelong commitment. All are invited to come and learn more about Latino life in North Carolina through art. This event is part of the First Friday Gallery Walk and is made possible through the NC Council of Churches\, Vintage Church and the City Gallery and generous funding from Z. Smith Reynolds. The show will be up all month.

The stores in Greensboro and Cary are holding Shop for a Cause events to benefit the NC Council of Churches. A portion of the proceeds raised during designated shopping periods at each store will be donated to the Council to continue our work for unity\, justice\, and peace. Council staff and volunteers will host both events\, so join us for the fellowship\, as well. \n\n\nTen Thousand Villages is a network of fair trade stores\, dealing directly with artisans around the world and selling their wares at prices that offer a fair wage. It connects individual entrepreneurs in developing countries with market opportunities in North America. DESCRIPTION:Commemorate the 32\,000 lives that are lost every year to gun violence. Roughly once a week this year\, on average\, a small child has found a gun\, pointed it at himself or someone else and pulled the trigger. Additionally\, since the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012\, there have been at least 864 other mass shootings in the U.S. Gun violence affects people regardless of age\, income\, location\, religion\, and race.  For more information or to RSVP\, email North Carolinians Against Gun Violence. \nThis event coincides with the Faiths United to Prevent Sabbath Weekend.

SUMMARY:Prayer Vigil and Multicultural Potluck
DESCRIPTION:As the Triangle community responds to the global refugee crisis and intense backlash against Syrian refugees after the devastating attacks in Beirut\, Paris and Baghdad\, local faith communities are sending an intentional message of welcome to all refugees and immigrants. On Monday\, December 7 at 6 PM\, faith leaders\, service organizations\, refugee resettlement agencies and immigrant advocates will hold a prayer vigil immediately followed by multicultural dinner organized by the North Carolina Council of Churches. At the dinner\, participants will enjoy food from home and ancestral countries\, and will discuss the importance of building a welcoming community for refugees and immigrants\, highlighting the contributions they make to the Triangle communities. \nAll are invited to come together to pray for peace throughout the world and then to break bread with our neighbors from other countries. Please bring a dish from your own culture or ancestry to share and/or\, a canned food donation for the food pantry of Urban Ministries. The event will take place at 6pm at the St. Philip’s Episcopal Church (403 E. Main St.). Everyone is welcome. Many thanks to Church World Service for helping to organize this event. \n
