SUMMARY:Documentary Showing: "Pictures from a Hiroshima Schoolyard"
DESCRIPTION:A collection of surprisingly joyful drawings created by school children living among the ruins of Hiroshima in 1947 becomes the heart and soul of this true\, inspiring story about an exchange of gifts between Americans and Japanese after a devastating war. This powerful documentary about reconciliation and the power of gift\, introduces the children artists (now in their late 70s) who reflect on their early lives amidst the rubble of their destroyed city and the hope they shared through their art. In 2010\, the newly restored drawings\, buried for decades deep inside All Souls Church in Washington DC\, are taken back to Japan where they are reunited with the artists and exhibited in the very building where they were created. \nAdmission is free but donations to NC Peace Action will be accepted. Cosponsored by NC Peace Action\, Highland United Methodist Church Micah 6:8 Team\, Lutheran Peace Fellowship\, New Hope Presbytery Peace Making Committee\, and the Peace Committee of the NC Council of Churches.

SUMMARY:Putting Our Faith into Action: Supporting Farm Workers in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Listen! The wages of the laborers who mowed your fields\, which you kept back by fraud\, cry out\, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.” James 5:4 \nMany faith traditions call us to support farm workers – some of the most exploited workers in the U.S. – and their efforts to improve their lives. Putting Our Faith into Action: Supporting Farm Workers in North Carolina is an opportunity to learn about farm workers’ struggle for justice and how we can support them in their efforts to gain dignity on the job\, better pay\, and safer working conditions. \nFarm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) President Baldemar Velasquez will provide an update on FLOC’s national tobacco campaign and summer organizing efforts in North Carolina. Representatives from regional groups will share their upcoming activities and more information about Farmworker Awareness Week. \nNational Farm Worker Ministry invites you to gather with people from various faith backgrounds to find out how you can participate in the farm worker movement happening in North Carolina. \nFor more information contact the NFWM National Office at 919-807-8707\, info@nfwm.org or\nvisit www.nfwm.org. \nSponsored by: National Farm Worker Ministry\, United Church of Christ Justice and Witness Ministries\, North Carolina Council of Churches and the Farm Labor Organizing Committee

SUMMARY:Moral Monday and Public Religious Leadership: Honoring the Legacy of Will Campbell
DESCRIPTION:The School of Divinity in partnership with the North Carolina Council of Churches\, and the Wake Forest University Department of Religion\, the Religion and Public Engagement Program\, and Office of the Chaplain\, will be hosting a forum on Moral Mondays and Public Religious Leadership. \nThe forum is held in honor and remembrance of Will Campbell (’48). Professor Stephen Boyd from the Department of Religion will be lecturing. Other presenters will include community leaders who participated in Moral Monday events during the last legislative session. \nSchedule\n\n\n\n2:00pm\nWelcome and Words about Will Campbell\n\n\n2:15pm\nPanel of Participants in Moral Mondays\n\n\n3:00pm\n“Moral Mondays and Dr. King’s Dream of a Multi-Racial Human Rights Movement”: Lecture by Steve Boyd\, John Allen Easley Professor of Religion\nLecture is sponsored by the Z. Smith Reynolds Library Lecture Series\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture: The lecture will address the Moral Monday Movement that began during the 2013 Session of the North Carolina Legislature. Attention will be given to select aspects of the legislative agenda\, their effects on various members of the state’s population\, media coverage\, and the nature\, growth\, and aims of the demonstrations\, including the 950 who engaged in non-violent civil disobedience and were arrested. Boyd will touch on the larger historical context of race and class in the US and North Carolina and then suggest that this new movement has the potential to answer Dr. King’s call for a broadening of the Civil Rights Movement to a multi-racial human rights movement.\n\n\n4:15pm\nPanel: “Next Steps for Religious Leaders and Communities”\n\n\n\n  \n About Will D. Campbell\nWill D. Campbell (’48) was a theologian\, pastor\, university official\, writer\, and social activist. He served as the Director of the Southern Churchmen\, which served as a platform for his extensive commentary over half a century on the intersections of faith and social conscience. His first book\, published in 1962\, was Race and the Renewal of the Church. His 1977 book Brother to a Dragonfly\, which chronicles the civil rights movement\, was a National Book Award finalist. President Clinton honored Campbell with a Presidential Humanities Medal in 2000\, and he has been given lifetime achievement awards from the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee and the Tennessee chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
