SUMMARY:Candlelight Vigil Against Gun Violence
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of the second anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy\, as well as the 60\,000 American victims of gun violence since December 2012\, North Carolinians Against Gun Violence\, the Peace Committee of the NC Council of Churches\, and others are joining the Newtown Foundation\, Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence\, States United to Prevent Gun Violence and the Washington National Cathedral in a nationwide vigil service of mourning and remembrance for all those who have fallen victim to the ongoing epidemic of gun violence in America.   \nAccording to recent statistics\, there have been at least 91 school shootings\, including fatal and nonfatal assaults\, suicides\, and unintentional shootings\, since the tragic assault in Newtown\, CT. Since Newtown\, there has been nearly one school shooting per week.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s conference is titled “Voting Rights for All” and focuses on the changed made by the NC General Assembly to voting laws in 2013. Former NC Senator Ellie Kinnaird will be the keynote speaker\, and there will be a panel of individuals affected by the changes in the laws. DESCRIPTION:David is an award-winning songwriter\, speaker\, and author. A veteran of 11 CDs and 2000 concerts on four continents\, he suspended his eighteen-year music career at its peak in 2008 to accept a Rotary World Peace Fellowship to obtain a Masters degree in International Studies\, Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Queensland in Brisbane\, Australia. As part of that degree\, he also spent three months in rural Andhra Pradesh\, India working with a Gandhian development organization. \nA former program associate with the Council\, he continues to serve as our Consultant for Peace. \nSponsors for the concert are the Episcopal Campus Ministry\, Lutheran Campus Ministry\, Presbyterian Campus Ministry\, Lutheran Campus Ministry\, and Wesley Foundation at NC State along with the NC Council of Churches.

SUMMARY:Documentary Showing: "Pictures from a Hiroshima Schoolyard"
DESCRIPTION:A collection of surprisingly joyful drawings created by school children living among the ruins of Hiroshima in 1947 becomes the heart and soul of this true\, inspiring story about an exchange of gifts between Americans and Japanese after a devastating war. This powerful documentary about reconciliation and the power of gift\, introduces the children artists (now in their late 70s) who reflect on their early lives amidst the rubble of their destroyed city and the hope they shared through their art. In 2010\, the newly restored drawings\, buried for decades deep inside All Souls Church in Washington DC\, are taken back to Japan where they are reunited with the artists and exhibited in the very building where they were created. \nAdmission is free but donations to NC Peace Action will be accepted. DESCRIPTION:Join us as Dr. David Gushee leads a Torture Awareness Month discussion on what we already know of the CIA’s systematic use of torture\, and what we expect to learn from the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report once it is released. Speaking with him are Rev. Luke Powery\, Dean of Chapel and Associate Professor of the Practice of Homiletics at Duke University\, and Christina Cowger\, Coordinator for North Carolina Stop Torture Now. \nDr. Gushee is the Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics and the Director of the Center for Theology and Public Life at Mercer University where he is also theologian-in-residence for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Dr. Gushee served on the Task Force on Detainee Treatment of the The Constitution Project\, where he has helped to make the public more aware of the United States’ use of torture. He was also the principal drafter of the Evangelical Declaration against Torture in 2007. \nThe Council is co-sponsoring this event with The Constitution Project\, National Religious Campaign Against Torture\, KARAMAH: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights\, and NC StopTorture Now.

She works constantly in the community tackling food insecurities and health disparities in a non-traditional\, theatrical way by creating programming for organizations and K-12 through the non-profit projects she’s co-founded: Grocers on Wheels and Raindownus.org. SUMMARY:2014 Critical Issues Seminar -- Public Education
DESCRIPTION:The NC Council of Churches’ 2014 Critical Issues Seminar will focus on public education from pre-K through college. This daylong event will be held at United Church of Chapel Hill on Monday\, June 16\, from 9:00 – 3:45 (with check-in beginning at 8:15). The cost is $25 ($15 for students and for Pre-K through college educators)\, which will include arrival snacks and lunch. Register here. \nThe keynote speaker will be Mike Ward\, former State Superintendent of Public Instruction for NC from 1997-2004. Bishop Hope Morgan Ward of the NC Conference of the United Methodist Church will lead worship. Dr. Scott Ralls\, current President of the NC Community College System\, Rebecca Garland\, Deputy State Superintendent for the NC Department of Public Instruction\, and Drew Moretz\, Vice President of Governmental Relations for the UNC System will participate in a roundtable discussion to complete the morning session. The afternoon schedule will include two sessions of workshops led by public school advocates and faith leaders from around NC. Workshop sessions will cover topics such as the teaching profession\, wealth disparities\, early childhood education\, college issues\, and what churches can do to support public schools. The program will end early enough to allow those who attend the seminar time to join the Moral Monday event that evening in Raleigh. \nThe North Carolina Council of Churches has long affirmed the role of public schools as one of society’s primary vehicles for social\, racial\, and economic justice. Our goal is to provide information for progressive people of faith on ways they can engage and support the public education system in our state. The Council is excited to lift up voices in support of public education. We hope you will consider attending and lifting up your voice as well.

DESCRIPTION:We are co-sponsoring an opportunity for pastors and church leaders to come together and engage in conversation about food justice issues. We will discuss food insecurity and food deserts within Winston-Salem as well as the connection between food and faith at “Churches Working Together: A Food Justice Event.”  It takes place on Saturday\, April 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lower Auditorium of Wingate Hall on the campus of Wake Forest University School of Divinity. Putting Our Faith into Action: Supporting Farm Workers in North Carolina is an opportunity to learn about farm workers’ struggle for justice and how we can support them in their efforts to gain dignity on the job\, better pay\, and safer working conditions. \nFarm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) President Baldemar Velasquez will provide an update on FLOC’s national tobacco campaign and summer organizing efforts in North Carolina.
