He is the first Latino person to serve in this role. Prior to his call to the priesthood\, José worked in the criminal justice field in Florida as a police officer and in the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington\, D.C.\, in various positions\, most recently as the special assistant/senior advisor to the assistant attorney general. \nDavid Meeker is co-owner of Trophy Brewing\, State of Beer\, and Carpenter Development. David is on the Board of the Raleigh Chamber\, Downtown Raleigh Alliance\, Common Cause NC\, Dix Park\, Dogwood Bank Advisory Board\, and Artspace. He is also on the Capital Campaign Committee for Healing Transitions\, a free detox and recovery center on Dix Park. David is a Raleigh native and lives in downtown Raleigh with his wife and two boys. \nMajor Rico Boyce has been with the Raleigh Police Department for 21 years. He is currently assigned as the Division Commander of the Field Operations Division (Patrol). Sadly\, these murders are representative of the violent racial injustices that plague our nation. SUMMARY:No Justice No Peace: Confederate Monuments and the Fight for Racial Justice
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to Confederate monuments\, there is no common ground. Polarizing debates over their meaning have intensified into legislative maneuvering to preserve the statues\, legal battles to remove them\, and rowdy crowds taking matters into their own hands. These conflicts have raged for well over a century\, but they’ve never been as intense as they are today. \nJoin us and the NC Commission on Racial & Ethnic Disparities in the Criminal Justice System (NC CRED) for a discussion with Dr. Karen L. Cox\, author of No Common Ground: Confederate Monuments and the Ongoing Fight for Racial Justice. \nClick here to register. \nDr. Cox is an award-winning historian\, Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians\, and professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Cox will lead conversation on her book as we learn together and mobilize to take meaningful action. \n\nAbout the book \nIn this eye-opening narrative of the efforts to raise\, preserve\, protest\, and remove Confederate monuments\, Karen L. Cox depicts what these statues meant to those who erected them and how a movement arose to force a reckoning. She lucidly shows the forces that drove white southerners to construct beacons of white supremacy\, as well as the ways that antimonument sentiment\, largely stifled during the Jim Crow era\, returned with the civil rights movement and gathered momentum in the decades after the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Monument defenders responded with gerrymandering and “heritage” laws intended to block efforts to remove these statues\, but hard as they worked to preserve the Lost Cause vision of southern history\, civil rights activists\, Black elected officials\, and movements of ordinary people fought harder to take the story back. Timely\, accessible\, and essential\, No Common Ground is the story of the seemingly invincible stone sentinels that are just beginning to fall from their pedestals.

NAACP. Dr. Spearman is an ordained minister with the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church denomination (A.M.E. Zion). He has worked extensively in leadership of the denomination in North Carolina on many levels since 1997\, and has been the pastor of St. Philip AME  Zion Church in Greensboro\, N.C since 2014. Prior to his pastoral career\, Dr. Spearman worked in correctional institutions\, hospitals\, colleges\, and community based programs as a substance abuse counselor. Dr. Spearman has been a courageous and controversial servant in the NC NAACP in the Historic Thousands on Jones Street Movement (HKonJ)\, and the Moral Monday Movement. In 2011\, he was named the NC NAACP Minister of the Year. DESCRIPTION:This past autumn\, PHW held its first Sacred Conversation on the epidemic of loneliness and social isolation for those in life’s second chapter\, particularly in the time of Covid.
