SUMMARY:Answering the Call: The American Struggle for the Right to Vote
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of “Answering the Call: The American struggle for the Right to Vote” followed by a You Can Vote representative who will discuss voter registration and voting procedures in North Carolina. \nAbout the film: \nFifty-five years ago\, Americans watched in horror as images of bloody police attacks on voting rights protesters on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma\, Alabama appeared on national TV networks\, shocking the consciences of many Americans. John Witeck was in his second year at the University of Virginia then when Martin Luther King subsequently called for clergy to join him in Selma. John and two fellow students joined two clergymen in answering this call and drove overnight from Charlottesville to Selma and arrived there on Turnaround Tuesday\, two days after Bloody Sunday. \nFifty-one years later (2016)\, John and his nephew\, film producer Brian Jenkins\, traveled to Alabama to both document John’s story in Selma in 1965 as well as the broader struggle for voting rights then and through the ensuing years. From the Voting Rights Act of 1965 through the 2013 Supreme Court decision that hobbled it\, this film depicts the tortured struggle that continues to this day. \nThis film features interviews with John Lewis\, voting rights experts in academia\, the state senator who represents Selma today\, a Pulitzer Prize- winning journalist in Birmingham\, ACLU’s executive director in Montgomery\, Alabama’s current Secretary of State\, and others. \nClick here to register.

DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment which granted many women in the US the right to vote. However\, 1920 was not the end of the fight for suffrage for many\, including women of color and Native American women. In fact\, women of color were marginalized in the women’s suffrage movement that led to the ratification of the 19th Amendment. \nPanelists will discuss the history of racism within women’s movements and the importance of acknowledging and reconciling history to build supportive relationships in the future. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the next part of our Sacred Conversations series\, on Friday\, July 24 at 11am via Zoom. This will be part two of our two-part series titled “Becoming a Trauma-Informed Faith Community.” This will be a continuation of part one\, from June 26 (recording available on our YouTube page here)\, where we defined what trauma-informed care and ministry is. We will continue to explore ways that a faith community can address trauma\, and by doing so\, become a more welcoming and comfortable space for people of all experiences. We will learn from Dr. Dawn Baldwin Gibson\, who pastors trauma-informed ministries in Eastern NC.  \nPastor Dawn is the Executive Pastor of Peletah Ministries and Superintendent of the Peletah Academic Center for Excellence\, places of intentional growth where congregants and students are encouraged to process their experiences and find faith in a safe and welcoming space. Both of these ministries are culturally competent and trauma-informed in practice.
