As we celebrate 90 years of faithful work for justice and equity this year, we’re sharing stories of 90 Years Rooted in Faith that reflect the heart of the North Carolina Council of Churches. Each month, you’ll hear from staff and long-time friends of the Council as they highlight the transformative impacts we’ve had on our community and our vision for the future. Stay tuned for these inspiring reflections throughout the year!
“The Council is one of the best kept secrets in North Carolina.” Many of you will recognize these words from our Executive Director, Jennifer Copeland. She says them often when supporters of the Council are gathered together. While I agree with the sentiment, my hope is the secret won’t be kept quiet for much longer.
It reminds me of the familiar children’s song, “This Little Light of Mine.” As we celebrate 90 years of the Council’s good work, we scream a resounding “No!” to hiding this light under a bushel. It is truly an exciting time — an opportunity to celebrate our history while also committing to our future in new and energizing ways.
It is hard to imagine when that group of pastors met 90 years ago, they ever considered the Council would be what it is today. Yet, it is because of their faith and imagination emboldened by movement of God’s Spirit that the Council ever came to fruition. In all these 90 years, the Council has been a guiding light in the heart of North Carolina and around the nation.
Through these 90 years the Council has found ways to evolve with an ever-evolving faith and a focus on Jesus’ words, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me.” Justice, action, faith: the Council continues to let its little light shine brightly and in doing so proclaims the Good News in a rough world. And may this continue to be the faithful path we follow as the secret of the Council is uncovered by many, many others.
