On Sunday, October 12, 2025, Rev. Susannah Tuttle delivered the following word at Duke University Chapel, with Rev. Dr. Jennifer Copeland also preaching. To view the recording of the service, click here.
In a world that feels more divided than ever — politically, economically, even spiritually — the North Carolina Council of Churches is doing something profoundly countercultural. It’s bringing people together. Across denominations, across racial and economic lines, across urban and rural divides, the Council has been a steady voice for justice, compassion, and unity.
Since its founding in 1935, the Council has stood at the forefront of movements for civil rights, economic justice, health equity, environmental stewardship, and racial reconciliation — always rooted in the deep, prophetic call of the Gospel.
Today, that work continues — educating, and supporting churches as we respond to the climate crisis, address gun violence and mental health, promote voting access and healthcare for all, and walking alongside faith communities who believe in living out their values in public life.
Anchored in hope, we work toward a vision of the world where all people and creation thrive, for the well-being of present and future generations. This is faithful, deeply impactful work — and it only happens because people like you believe that the Gospel calls us to something more than comfort. It calls us to courage, to action, and to hope.
It is with great pleasure and honor to have the opportunity this morning to invite you to celebrate that legacy — and the future of this movement.
On Saturday, November 1st at 1:00 PM, we hope you will join us in community for a special celebration marking 90 years of radical love and hope in action.
We are honored to welcome The Right Reverend Michael B. Curry, retired 27th Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church and the first African American to serve in that role. Bishop Curry — known around the world for his dynamic preaching and passionate commitment to justice — will deliver a sermon that will challenge, inspire, and uplift us as we look toward the future.
Following worship, you’re invited to stay for a live recording of the Everything Happens podcast, as Duke professor and author Kate Bowler interviews Bishop Curry about his life, ministry, and what sustains him in the work of love.
This is more than an event — it’s a chance to gather in joy, to remember our shared calling, and to move forward together.
Friends, this morning I also invite you to support the mission of the North Carolina Council of Churches — with your prayers, your interest, and yes, your financial gifts. Your support helps support faith leaders. It amplifies moral voices for justice. And it keeps alive the vision of a Church that not only preaches good news but embodies it — boldly, publicly, and with love. As you feel led, I encourage you to give generously and share the love in your heart fully. Thank you for being part of a community that believes faith should make a difference. And thank you for standing with the NC Council of Churches in this holy work. Amen.
Join us in continuing this legacy of justice and courage. Your gift supports the Council’s work for equity and compassion across North Carolina. Donate today.
