New Start Ratification

November 22, 2010 by David LaMotte, Consultant for Peace

I strongly encourage people of faith who feel so led to contact their senators and urge them to support ratification of the New START treaty, which will reduce the US and Russian stockpiles by 30% and allow on-the-ground inspections, suspended last year as the START I treaty expired, to resume.

For a clear and thorough argument in favor of New START, check out this article on ArmsControl.org.  For a more readable argument, try this op-ed. Clearly there are reasons to question the treaty, including its expansion of missile defense systems. On the whole, though, I think this is a good direction to move in, and as soon as possible.

If you are convinced, as I am, that ratifying this treaty is a good and faithful course of action, please call your senators to urge them to support ratification. These phone calls matter, and are assumed to represent many more people who are assumed to have not gotten around to calling, so please take the time and encourage others to do the same.

Senator Richard Burr (R-NC): (202) 224-3154
Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC): (202) 224-6342

The phone numbers for other states’ senators are easily found here, in case you’re out of state.

Grace and peace,

David LaMotte, Program Associate for Peace
