Bipartisanship between North Carolina’s Senators Burr and Hagan does occasionally show through — but why and for what? The willingness of our NC Senators and others in Washington to come together in support of war with Iran, and maintaining a budget with more than 50% of discretionary funds spent on the Pentagon is not what we would hope for. Meanwhile the protracted disagreement over funding much-needed domestic programs, such as extending unemployment benefits, shows how we fall short as a peaceful nation.
As John Heuer, Director of NC Peace Action, notes in his article on page 10 of the Chatham County Line we need our NC senators, others in Congress, and the President to work together to “Bring our war dollars home to fund desperately needed infrastructure repair, jobs, education and an economy built on renewable energy; release the Senate report on CIA torture; Close Guantanamo; No War on Iran!”
Certainly a worthy goal, but the fact that we spend resources to defend our nation is not our fault but the fault of evil people who would do us harm. Are you advocating that we not defend our nation and just allow other nations to impose their will on us? Should we allow rogue nations like Iran possess a nuclear bomb?
Regarding renewable energy, we should allow the marketplace determine the winners and losers, not the government. The federal government doesn’t have a good record of picking the winners.
