Please Call Senator Burr

March 25, 2014 by Aleta Payne, Former Deputy Executive Director

A vote is imminent on releasing the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report on torture, and we need you to contact Sen. Richard Burr and urge him to support the release.

North Carolina people of faith signed a letter last summer urging the Senator to do just that. Progress has been slow, but Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Chair of the Senate Committee, has announced that she plans to hold a vote this week (March 24-29). And so there is urgency in reaching out to Sen. Burr, who is one of 15 members of the SSCI.

But, as the independent, bipartisan Task Force on Detainee Treatment said almost a year ago, “the nation’s highest officials bear some responsibility for allowing and contributing to the spread of torture.”

Please contact Sen. Burr’s office by phone at 202-224-3154 and urge him to support release of the SSCI report on torture. Your message could be as simple as one suggested by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture:

“Hello, I’m _____calling from North Carolina. The American people deserve to know all the facts about the CIA’s use of torture, and I would like my Senator to vote to release the report on torture to the public.”

Aleta is a graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in government and foreign affairs and spent much of her early career as a journalist. She has three young adult sons who continue to come home to Cary for dinner, or at least groceries, and two young adult terrier-mix dogs who keep the nest from feeling too empty.
