Jesus mentions when discussing faith-based activity, “Do not sound a trumpet before you…so that [you] might be praised” (Matthew 6:2) and advises that those who work toward the Reign of God do so regardless of reward. More often than not, that’s exactly what we do here at the NC Council of Churches, but this week is different. This week we learned that the North Carolina Justice Center has selected us to receive their Defender of Justice Award for Grassroots Empowerment. We are honored and humbled to be in the fine company of other recipients this year such as Representative David Price, one of the defenders as a Lifetime Champion, and Anita Earls, one of the defenders for Litigation.
Besides being in such stellar awardee company, it’s deeply meaningful to garner this recognition from our allies at the NC Justice Center. Their tireless work to bring transparency to the legislative policies of our state helps inform the work we do to refract these issues through the lens of faith.
While the work will continue regardless of sounding trumpets or award recognition, we are grateful to be noticed at such a time as this when our purpose has never been more clear or more urgent. So, please join us, just this once, as we toot our own horn!
