DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A group of North Carolina churches is among more than two dozen religious organizations suing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security over a new policy that allows the arrest of undocumented migrants in churches and schools.
The North Carolina Council of Churches represents more than 6,000 congregations across the state. Reverand Dr. Jennifer Copeland, executive director of NCCC, says the sense of security previously felt at a place of worship is now gone for some members of the church.
Copeland said their member churches are already seeing the effect of a new immigration enforcement policy.
“If God asks us to care for the vulnerable, but the vulnerable are afraid to come and receive the care that people are willing to offer, then again, it’s an inability to live into the claims of the gospel,” Copeland said.
