Let Freedom Ring: A National Bell-Ringing for Democracy

On April 18, congregations across the country will join together in a powerful, symbolic act: ringing bells for democracy. Inspired by the events of 250 years ago—when Boston’s Old North Church signaled the start of Paul Revere’s ride and churches throughout the area rang their bells in warning—we invite houses of worship everywhere to take part in this modern echo of history.
We encourage all participants to ring their bells anytime between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. in their local time zone, creating a sweeping wave of sound and solidarity from coast to coast.
At 6 p.m., the Old North Church will ring its historic bells—the oldest in America—in commemoration of the day the American people began their fight for freedom, liberty, and justice for all. Whether your congregation has bells or not, you can be part of this nationwide moment. Rally your faith community to stand up for democracy and ensure that the spirit of April 18, 1775, lives on today.
