NC No Torture Interfaith Prayer Vigil – Raleigh

September 27, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

You’re invited to an interfaith gathering to remember victims of the U.S. torture program.  The vigil will offer an opportunity to meditate, hear speakers from several traditions, and join voices, hands, and hearts with others who believe North Carolina has a responsibility to those who were transported for torture in NC jets.

Aero Contractors, headquartered at the Johnston County Airport, was responsible for secretly transporting at least 49 people between 2001 and 2004.  For “renditions,” these prisoners were beaten, stripped, diapered, drugged, and loaded onto Aero’s jets for flights to torture sites. There, they were subjected to water tortures, prolonged painful stress positions, sexual humiliation, and much more.  NC taxes provided the airports in Smithfield and Kinston where the “torture taxis” and their pilots were based.

The NC Commission of Inquiry on Torture (NCCIT) is to release its report on the morning of September 27, 2018.  Based on its research, including two days of victim and expert testimony in November 2017, the Commission will renew the call for an official investigation of these activities.

The NC Council of Churches and NC Stop Torture Now encourage you to attend, learn the NCCIT’s recommendations, and add your voice to the call for them to be carried out.
