Screening of American Coup: Wilmington 1898

March 29 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Join Umstead Park United Church of Christ for a screening of American Coup: Wilmington 1898. This powerful documentary is sparking critical conversations about the legacy of white supremacy and the importance of preserving democracy. The film uncovers the untold story of the only successful coup d’état in U.S. history, when white supremacists overthrew Wilmington’s multiracial government in 1898. This pivotal event reshaped the political and social landscape of North Carolina and the United States, but its history was suppressed for decades. Now, the film sheds light on this dark chapter to inspire meaningful conversations across communities.

There will be a Q&A session after the film where educators and leaders from social justice organizations in the community will discuss lessons from the film and ways that audience members can take action on racial justice issues. Both the film and the Q&A session will be approximately one hour each.
