Webinar: A Faithful Response to ICE Raids and Detentions

May 17, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

At the beginning of 2016, ICE (Immigration and Custom Enforcement) stepped up deportations of undocumented Central Americans in North Carolina. Now is the time for faith communities to respond to these raids, which have separated families, imposed suffering and heightened fears among the immigrant community. This webinar will use recordings from a community forum held in Asheville last month to include updates on local organizing strategies from the western part of the state that can be used statewide, including emergency response, sanctuary, improving relationships with local law enforcement, and other legal issues that churches may face.

Speakers:
Anton Flores Maisonet, co-founder of Alterna, a Christian missional community based in Georgia and comprised of U.S. citizens and Latin American immigrants. A passionate and engaging speaker, he shares out of his experience of living in community in Georgia with undocumented persons and offering hospitality to friends and family members of detainees at nearby Stewart Detention Center.

Marisol Jimenez, co-coordinator Racial Equity Circle, Center for Participatory Change and former Advocacy Director and Lobbyist at El Pueblo.

Moderated by Jennie Belle, Program Director for Farmworker and Immigrant Rights at the NC Council of Churches.

Thank you to Circle of Mercy congregation, in partnership with Nuestro Centro, CIMA (Compañeros Inmigrantes de las Montañas en Accion), and Center for Participatory Change for taking the lead on this important conversation.
RSVP online and call-in information will be emailed to you. You can also register to receive a recording if you cannot attend.
