What Democracy is Not

November 1, 2010 by David LaMotte, Consultant for Peace

This is a video blog I shot yesterday while my toddler was taking his nap.  Just a few thoughts about voting, not voting and the significance of each.

Thanks David. I voted in the past election. But I am always very aware of the Mennonites in my congregation and my denomination who refuse to vote because of their Christian convictions.

Thanks for bringing that up, Isaac. I’m sorry to say that I haven’t seen these arguments cogently presented before, but even the introduction to the book you link to provides some compelling challenges, and I look forward to reading more.

This video forgets the important part of the Christian peace tradition that chooses not to vote. LaMotte contributes to the cultural sentiment that renders conscientious non-voters unimportant to politics.

For the arguments of responsible citizens who choose not to vote, see Electing Not To Vote: Christian Reflections on Reasons for Not Voting, edited by Ted Lewis (Cascade, 2008).
