This morning marked a historic day as the Council hosted their first legislative prayer breakfast at the North Carolina General Assembly. In attendance were faith leaders from the Council’s 18 denominations as well as state senators and representatives. The following prayer was offered by Executive Director Jennifer Copeland at the closing of our time together as a blessing over our elected officials for this General Assembly session:
Grant, O Holy One, that all who dwell within your magnificent creation might live together in love, revealing your glory to all the world. Guide the people of this great state, North Carolina, all the states of this nation, and all the nations of this world, in the ways of justice and peace. Teach us to honor one another and serve the common good. Give us a reverence for the earth as your own creation and teach us to use your gifts responsibly. Let us see in one another and in the faces of all those we meet, your face reflecting grace throughout the world.
On this day especially, and for the duration of this General Assembly session, we pray for our elected leaders and all who hold positions of public trust. Grant them wisdom to know the way of justice. And when the way is not clear, grant them the patience to wait for clarity so that right and true decisions will follow. When the way of justice is clearly revealed, give them the courage to stay the course. May that course always be to enact laws that promote the dignity and freedom of the people of North Carolina. We ask that you would give each of our elected leaders a double portion of wisdom and a singular commitment to justice. In the name of the one who came to bring us truth, who lived to show us grace, and who rose to show us hope. Amen.
