The political situation at the national level has occupied the time and attention of many faithful progressives. Each day has brought with it more reasons to be concerned for our most vulnerable sisters and brothers as well as for our democratic system of government. Right now, there isn’t much reason to believe things will improve.
We must also be mindful of activity underway in the North Carolina General Assembly, where legislation is in the works that would significantly weaken our state’s safety net and would make it harder to right those wrongs going forward.
The Council’s 2017 Legislative Seminar, taking place on Monday, March 27 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Raleigh, offers a full program of North Carolina experts to help you understand what’s going on in the General Assembly and to give you tips on how best to make your voice heard. From budget and taxes to the attack on the Governor’s powers, from immigration to health care, from issues impacting the LGBTQ community to the urban-rural divide, the daylong seminar provides the opportunity to be prepared as you contact your elected officials about legislation that matters to you.
At lunchtime, we will present the Faith Active in Public Life Award to Lisa Price, founder of North Carolinians Against Gun Violence, and to U.S. Representative David Price. Congressman Price will then offer our keynote about the ongoing activity at the federal level and its impact on North Carolina.
To attend, please register here by March 20 to guarantee lunch although registration will be accepted afterward for those not in need of a meal. Also, please share information about the seminar with folks who might not have attended before but are now engaging in advocacy at a new or deeper level.
The program for the day features an excellent line-up of speakers as well a the chance to spend the day with progressive people of faith. We hope you’ll join us.
