By Steve Ford, Former Volunteer Program Associate

It was just one little comment, perhaps ventured with the flicker of a wry smile. But we can doubt that Tom Farr saw the humor in being ribbed by a federal judge. Farr, attorney for the defendants in a challenge to North Carolina’s voter ID law, was wrapping up his case on Feb. 1 before […]

Voter ID on Trial

By Steve Ford, Former Volunteer Program Associate

The ongoing legal challenge to North Carolina’s voter ID rule, now playing out before a federal judge in Winston-Salem, could end up reminding us that it’s not the job of the courts to decide whether a law is needed or wise. It’s their job to decide whether a law violates someone’s constitutional rights. Yet the […]

By Steve Ford, Former Volunteer Program Associate

Few of the decisions made by the men and women of our General Assembly are so prone to self-serving, partisan abuse as the setting of boundaries for voting districts. There are many ways to shop with a conscience supporting values we hold dear. There are […]

Learning to Grieve, Part 2

By Joy Williams, Former PHW Regional Coordinator

Grieving is a healthy response to life’s brokenness. When we grieve we allow our emotions to catch up with our minds. It allows us to think more clearly, make better choices, and we might be able to avoid the “comfort” foods that can mask our pain or negatively affect our own health. I noticed that […]

2015 Advent Devotional Guide Focuses on Refugees

By Aleta Payne, Former Deputy Executive Director

Learning to Grieve, Part I

By Joy Williams, Former PHW Regional Coordinator

I love the dark mornings, the tints of grey in the sky foreshadowing the brightness to come.  I especially love it when I wake at the fourth or fifth hour and get to just meditate, looking out my window into the mellow early day. This particular morning, I woke to a text. It was my […]

Coffee Cups and Jesus

By Aleta Payne, Former Deputy Executive Director

Jesus does not care about your latte. Your frappuccino, cappuccino, or mocha, either. At least, he doesn’t care about the cup it is served in and whether it’s branded to praise him. What Jesus would care about, based on his many preachings, teachings, and living out of the word, is the justice of that coffee. […]

Family Values for All God’s Family

By Aleta Payne, Former Deputy Executive Director

By George Reed, Retired Executive Director Here we go again.
